This marked a significant milestone as we officially began the “In the Wild Leader” training for the Canal & River Trust staff. It’s been fantastic to see their enthusiasm! We even had the pleasure of joining them for a recent team day, getting everyone actively involved in a Family Wellbeing Session. This hands-on experience was invaluable, allowing staff to truly understand the spirit and impact of the sessions they’ll soon be leading.

This immersive session provided the Canal & River Trust Education Team with a hands-on experience of new Family Wellbeing Session. By stepping into the role of participants, staff moved through a physical and emotional journey along the canal towpath. The session successfully demonstrated how specific tools can trigger a “state shift”—moving facilitators from the stresses of the “adult world” into a relaxed, mindful, and authentic state, better equipping them to lead the public.

Key Outcomes

  • Tool Competency: Staff gained confidence in using natural elements and eco-friendly resources, ensuring delivery is sympathetic to the canal environment.
  • Adaptability: Productive discussions took place regarding how to scale and adapt these tools for both rural and urban Canal & River Trust (CRT) locations.
  • Iterative Improvement: Constructive feedback on the “In Nature” tool was immediately implemented, resulting in a more streamlined activity for future sessions.
  • Team Wellbeing: A significant “bonus” outcome was the boost in team morale. The activities facilitated a shift in emotional states, fostering a sense of belonging and reconnection.
  • The Transition: Through activities like Dragonfly Breathing and quiet Present Moment time, the team began to decompress.
  • The Final State: By the time the team reached the boat-making and canal art activities, they had entered a creative, “child-like” state—laughing, creating without judgment, and feeling “lighter.”

The observation of the team transitioning into states of calm and happiness confirms that these tools are as effective for the facilitators as they are for the public. By mastering the ability to “change state” themselves, the team is now better equipped to lead the public in a relaxed, nurturing, and authentic way. This training has solidified the team’s passion for the canal while providing the practical skills to share that passion effectively.

We’re incredibly excited about the positive ripple effect this project will have on communities across England and Wales.
